During the industrial depression of the late 1930s over 1,000 unemployed miners and ship builders, from the North-East of England and South Wales, were given the opportunity to join Land Settlement Associations and begin new lives as market-gardeners. 20 LSAs were set up across England. The largest was Sidlesham, West Sussex, with 120 smallholdings.
